GOOD
THINGS ABOUT LIVERPOOL
CHINESE
NEW YEAR 2004
Well
here it is, our first cool thing about Liverpool, Chinese New Year celebrations.
Liverpool is said to be host to one of the oldest Chinese communities
in Europe, and vast crowds of all creeds and colours turned out to rightly
celebrate this heritage and welcome in the Year of the Monkey.
Ok,
so the dragon was a little smaller than I'd anticipated, but hey, any
festival where you can buy a paper "Dragon onna Stick" gets
my vote, and the atmosphere was easy-going and friendly. Good stuff!
Liverpool Chinatown History
The
Williamson Tunnels.
Now
here's a well kept secret of Liverpool, a vast complex of tunnels dug
out beneath its streets under the direction of wealthy eccentric Joseph
Williamson in the early 19th century.
The full extent of the mysterious tunnel complex is unknown, as no original
maps survive.
The
Williamson Tunnels Heritage
Center have opened up some of the tunnels for curious visitors to
see. For the moment this public area is quite small, but a small team
of volunteers are hard at work excavating and making safe new tunnels
to mystify future generations.
Offer your support by paying them a visit if you can.
